ISJ 2010 SERIES AUTUMN SHOW REPORT

INTERSCHOOL SHOW JUMPING IS INDEED REACHING GREATER HEIGHTS...

In recent years we have witnessed an explosive growth in the popularity of Show Jumping as an interschool sport perhaps inspired by the deeds of young Aussie riders on the world stage e.g., Matt Williams at the Olympics and Phillip Lever in the World Cup. This year eight schools will host Show Jumping Championships as Rounds of The Victorian Interschool Equestrian Series viz. Toorak College, Hillcrest Christian College, Geelong Grammar, Ivanhoe Grammar, The Peninsula School, Kardinia International School, Braemar College, and Geelong College.

The VIES has adopted the three round interschool Grand Prix format pioneered by our ISJ Interschool Show Jumping Series. This initiative is designed to encourage better jumping by making performance over obstacles the principal factor. All school children are catered for from the age of 6 with five height Levels, from Freshman (range 45cm to 60cm) to Stars (range 105cm to 120cm).

In the last couple of years a representative team from the Barwon Series has competed with a team representing the Mornington Peninsula Series for the ISJ Port Phillip Cup. This October, teams representing Gippsland and Yarra/Metro will be added to make the 2010 Port Phillip Cup a four-way contest.

Fifty-six schools sent riders to The Peninsula School hosted ISJ Autumn Show, held in three rings on courses designed by Beijing Olympian, Laurie Lever, at Treehaven on Friday 30 April. The one hundred and seventy-two young show jumpers were great ambassadors for their schools with well presented horses and riders, and clean jumping, the features of the day. The Hillcrest Christian College team of  Alex Benson, Bridgette Thompson, Gabrielle Lovett and Tameisha Kelly dead heated with  the Flinders Christian Community College team of Isabella Walsh, Lily Brown and Dana Barsnsley in the Autumn Show School Teams Challenge.

ISJ Autumn Stars 120cm Champion Magenta Hornsey (Toorak College) riding La Laina, made it three in a row after recent wins in the Stars Level at the Geelong Grammar and Ivanhoe Grammar Shows.  The Advanced 105cm Champion, Isabella Walsh (Flinders Christian Community College) riding the colourful Kris Kringle also continued her good form having won the ISJ 2009 Rider of the Year. The Progressive 90cm Champion Alice Kludass (St Margarets Berwick) riding Chocolate Delight  showed by her flawless rounds that she is ready for promotion. Both the Improvers 75cm Champion Mirrin Mackay (Yinnar Primary) riding Stormhaven Riverdance and the Freshman 60cm Champion Dana Barnsley (Flinders Christian Community College) riding Cameo Park Solitaire were first time winners.

We will circulate entries shortly for Round 3 of the ISJ 2010 Series – our Winter Show to be held on Friday, August 6th at Ayr Hill Equestrian Park. We hope to see you all there! Until then, good luck with your upcoming events!
